Why am I charged a housekeeping fee when I stay less than a week?
Housekeepers are the unsung heroes of your vacation. They often go unnoticed and unthanked as they work hard behind the scenes to make sure your condo is clean, fresh and inviting for your stay. And your vacation just wouldn’t be a vacation without them! So why is there a housekeeping fee when you stay less than a week? The simple answer to this question is the maintenance fee pays for 1 checkout cleaning service per week. When you stay for less than a week, more checkout cleans are needed and the housekeeping fee offsets these additional costs.
A little background information to help in understanding fees
What is a checkout clean? What’s a maintenance fee? How does this affect me? Let’s pause for a moment and explain. First, a checkout clean is the cleaning service housekeepers perform at the end of your stay to make the condo fresh and ready for the next arrival checking in to begin their vacation. Plantation Resort is primarily a vacation ownership (also known as timeshare) resort. This means those who come to vacation at Plantation Resort have purchased a week or more of vacation and are literally owners of their portion of time at Plantation Resort.
We welcome others here too – those who own at other vacation ownership properties and those who choose to make a rental reservation for their vacation (where those who rent pay their own housekeeping fee). We’re elated and excited to have you all come stay with us!
With all vacation ownership resorts, each owner shares in the expense of maintaining the resort, including insurance, utilities, and upkeep. This is called a maintenance fee and is normally evenly divided among all the owners at the resort. Part of this maintenance fee pays for cleaning the condo after each stay, i.e. the checkout clean. Since each owner at Plantation Resort owns at least one week (even points owners own points based on a week of inventory), their maintenance fee pays for the cleaning of their condo at the end of their week of vacation.
Of course this is industry standard; most, if not all, vacation ownership resorts charge a housekeeping fee for less than a week’s stay. Some places label it differently with such names as hospitality fee or resort fee. It may also be bundled with other fees.
When someone stays a full 7 nights then the $100 cost of the checkout clean is covered by the maintenance fee.
Let’s say an owner at Plantation Resort decides to stay for 4 nights. At the end of their stay, housekeeping performs a check-out clean that costs approximately $100. Another guest stays for 3 nights, finishing out the week. When that guest checks out housekeeping performs another $100 checkout clean. For the week, housekeeping performed 2 checkout cleans for a total of $200.
The maintenance fee pays $100 dollars for 1 checkout clean per week. So how do we make up for the remaining $100 dollars? This remaining cost is split between the two guests as a $50 dollar housekeeping fee.
In this example, there are two checkout cleans costing $100 each for a total of $200. With the $100 paid for by the maintenance fee plus the two $50 housekeeping fees we are able to cover the cost of this additional cleaning.
