If the chill in the salt breeze has chased you indoors, throw in some pepperoni – or another one of 70 pizza toppings of your choice – and some games for the kids inside Ultimate California Pizza (UCP) Game Zone. You’ll warm up in this pizza place on steroids, one of six UCPs in the Myrtle Beach area. Walls and floor space are lined with all the latest high-energy, interactive video games.

On our recent visit, my sons loved shooting basketball, as well as shooting zombies in The Walking Dead video game, plus hitting each other (with permission) in the bumper cars and throwing strikes in the mini Highway 66 bowling lanes. And all their efforts paid out in the end at the Game Zone’s Trophy Prize Center, where they redeemed their tickets for a selection of fun trinkets and toys.

Loads of play time will work up an appetite, which is why it’s perfect that UCP Game Zone also serves up a full menu of pizza, sandwiches, appetizers and salads in a playful dining room that sits under a collage of colorful light globes that glow overhead. There’s also a full bar for Mom and Dad, as well as an outdoor patio for warmer, alfresco playdates.

For starters, we recommend UCP’s famous Hummus Dip, served with fresh-baked palm bread, celery and cherry peppers. If you’re not up for throwing down some pizza, try one of their paninis, like the Turkey Avocado BLT; a stacked, toasted Italian sub; or a fresh salad, such as the Sonoma Valley Spinach Salad, a toss of spinach, red onions, tomatoes, mushrooms, sliced hard-boiled egg, crumbled bacon, smoked gouda and parmesan, paired with a breadstick.

Voted Best of the Beach for its signature pizza year after year, UCP boasts a menu that’s just been renovated to include some new appetizers, sandwiches, new vegan and vegetarian options, plus a new gluten-sensitive crust. Pizzas are prime here, with nearly 30 hand-crafted combinations – or you can build your own. One commonality no matter which pie route you choose: the freshest highest-quality ingredients from the dough to the last topping. We went with a large Big Kahuna, which starts with UCP’s Ultimate Red Sauce, then piles on pepperoni, smoked ham, ground beef, Italian sausage, sautéed mushrooms, green peppers, onions, black olives, tomatoes, mozzarella, parmesan and smoked gouda. Slices of heaven!

Additional pies that pique our palate on a return visit include the Kung Fu (sweet Thai chili sauce, vegan mozzarella, roasted red peppers, green onions, tofu and chopped peanuts), the Black & Bleu (EVOO-based with blackened USDA Choice NY Strip, red onions, tomatoes, chopped garlic, Monterey Jack and bleu cheese crumbles) and the Hipster (hummus-based with tomatoes, black olives, red onions, vegan mozzarella and fresh basil).
